Position Details (PhD Program)

 

The PhD projects aim at analyzing and solving real-world decision problems in healthcare with advanced methodology. The definite focus can be on capacity planning, personnel scheduling, or (medical) decision-making. Application areas to consider are operating rooms, intensive care units, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, etc. The concrete PhD project will be agreed on with the PhD candidate and Region Zealand who provides in-depth problem knowledge and real-world data.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be strengthening the department’s competencies in modeling and optimizing healthcare-related decision problems. You will work hand in hand with academics and healthcare professionals. As a PhD student, you will:

  • Be responsible for conducting your own research project
  • Teach and supervise engineering students
  • Contribute to new knowledge about analytics in healthcare
  • Strive to publish your work worldwide in recognized journals
  • Work in close collaboration with Region Zealand including regular in-person meetings (e.g., at Sorø)
  • Collaborate with researchers from the Management Science Division
  • Present your work at international conferences and seminars

The PhD projects will be supervised by Professor Jens O. Brunner and the candidates for the PhD positions will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Profound knowledge in operations research and management science including artificial intelligence
  • Knowledge in and practical experience with programming (e.g., Python, Java, Julia, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare systems

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study program, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education.

Salary and appointment terms 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. Starting date is preferably 1 July 2023, or as soon as the positions are filled. The positions are full-time positions.
