Endocrinologist with research focus type 2 diabetes
I am endocrinologist and work as a senior consultant at the medical department at Umeå University Hospital and as an assistant professor at Umeå University. My research is on the treatment of type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise and on the prediction of prediabetes and diabetes.

In type 2 diabetes, both insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion are impaired. Both are already abnormal in prediabetes and possibly even before that. I investigate the roll of impaired insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion in the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, I investigate if insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion can improve in individuals with type 2 diabetes and if that can lead to diabetes remission.

I investigate known and less known complications of type 2 diabetes such as atherosclerosis, fat storage in the liver and heart, lung impairment and altered hormone production of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucagon. I am conducting intervention studies with Paleolithic diet, exercise and total diet replacement for individuals with type 2 diabetes to investigate whether the complications described above are reversible.
