Head of Umeå School of Sport Sciences, Leader of one of the research areas of the Department of Education: Leadership, Organization and Working Life (LOA).
Position: Professor in Education
I am currently the director of Umeå School of Sport Sciences, leader for the education and research area Leadership, Organisation and Working Life (LOA) at the Department of Education and leader of the national network of Workplace learning. I am a professor in Education at Umeå University and have worked at the university since 1993, after a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Development. In 2004 I defended my dissertation on “Leadership making in academia” and in 2013 I became an associate professor (docent).

Over the years, I have, among other things, had assignments that included work with teacher and leader development issues, as a pedagogical consultant, as a teacher in education, as a program manager for the Human Resources Development Program, as a member and teacher in the Master’s program in leadership and organisation and between 2011-2017 as Pro-dean and later Dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Research projects that I have been involved in during recent years are the FAS-funded research project “Gender equality and academia: When will and choice meet obstacles, opportunities and resistance”, the Vinnova–funded Nordic Safety and Security project (NSS), where I was research leader for work package 3: “Leadership – employees – technology” with nine researchers/doctoral students from UmU and LTU involved, a KK-stiftelse-funded project on management and governance of the academy, within the framework of “Center for Knowledge Governance Studies” and the FORTE-funded project “The civilianization of the police: Gender, status and professional boundaries in crime investigation”, which run from 2021 to 2023. During the years 2010-2016, I was one of several “convenors” for the ESREA network Working Life and Learning (WLL), which resulted in both the organization of two international conferences and one book published by Sense Publishers.
My research interests have mainly been focused on two areas:
1) The Higher Education area: both in relation to governance issues, leadership issues and gender equality issues. To read more about research in the area of Gender in Academic Careers (GENIAC), see here:
2) The police organisation: in relation to civilianisation, leadership and gender issues.
Between the years 2008-2015, I was also project manager for a 15 credits assignment in leadership, communication and organisation for the National Police Board within the framework of the investment in the Police’s Indirect Leadership (PIL).
