Ph.D. student in mathematical statistics
Position Details (PhD Research Project)
The Statistics and Risk (S&R) section of the Department of Mathematics consists of three professors and a varying number of PhD students and postdocs, and coordinates or takes part in many research projects, nationally and internationally. Members of S&R teach a large variety of probability and statistics courses, from introductory to advanced level, organized by different faculties of the university. S&R is also involved in consultancy projects, giving its members the opportunity to apply their expertises in various areas of applications. S&R offers a dynamic, stimulating and international research environment.

You will do research in mathematical statistics at the Statistics and Risk section of the Department of Mathematics, leading to a Ph.D. degree.
Your research will be about dependence modelling in the context of multivariate extreme value analysis, the branch of statistics concerned with sample extremes, such as maxima and excesses over high thresholds. This will include the construction and study of dependence models based on graphical structures such as directed acyclic graphs and regular vine sequences, and the development of inference techniques on the parameters of such models. The latter will involve both a theoretical component leading to limit theorems or concentration inequalities and a numerical one, involving the development of statistical software in R or Python for Monte Carlo simulation studies and data analysis, for instance in the context of weather extremes.
You follow the doctoral program of the Arenberg Doctoral School, offering trainings in research skills and soft skills.
You give exercise classes in mathematics and statistics for courses taught by members of the Department of Mathematics.
You assist in the guidance of bachelor projects and master theses.
You assist in the organization of workshops, conferences and other research and teaching activities.
Profile
——————
At the start of the contract, you have a master degree in mathematics, statistics, or an equivalent degree with an important mathematics component.
You are able to teach mathematics exercise classes in Dutch. If your knowledge of Dutch is not sufficient, we ask you to follow language training classes so that after two years your Dutch language skills are sufficient for teaching exercise classes.
You have a solid knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
Offer
——————
We offer a scholarship as a Ph.D. student in the section of Statistics & Risk of the Department of Mathematics funded by a FLOF grant for one year. This can be extended to four years after a positive evaluation. The four-year period allows you to obtain a Ph.D. degree in mathematics.
