Position Details (Postdoc)
About UM6P & the Green Technology Institute
Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) is Africa’s premier research & innovation hub, driving economic and human development across the continent. Nestled in Benguérir’s Green City, our multidisciplinary campus forges strong partnerships with industry, government, and communities to deliver real-world solutions for a sustainable future.
The Green Technology Institute (GTI) at UM6P leads cutting-edge work in:
- Renewable energy systems (solar, wind, smart grids)
- Advanced digital technologies (Industry 4.0, IoT, automation)
- Green process engineering (circular-economy methods, low-impact design)
GTI’s mission is to cultivate the next generation of technical leaders and accelerate Africa’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
Project Overview
You will join an international multidisciplinary team tasked with developing data-driven decision-support tools to decarbonize mobile mining fleets. Focusing on strip-mining operations, your work will evaluate material intralogistics handling alternatives such as trolley-assist systems, battery-electric trucks, and in-pit crushing & conveying (IPCC), combining life-cycle analysis, and dynamic simulation. This research is part of OCP’s Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Mining initiative to achieve net-zero Scope 1 emissions, aligning with the company’s roadmap for sustainable mining operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Literature Survey & Case Definition
- Systematically review decarbonization technologies and cost–benefit frameworks in strip-mining mining.
- Define one or more representative strip-mine case studies; lead data collection and scenario development.
- Techno-Economic & Environmental Assessment
- Model life-cycle costs and greenhouse-gas emissions for IPCC, trolley-assist, battery-electric trucks, etc.
- Perform sensitivity and uncertainty analyses to quantify trade-offs under varying operating conditions.
- Simulation
- Build a dynamic simulation of mine haulage energy flows and storage.
- Validate models in collaboration with industry partners and domain experts.
- Knowledge Dissemination
- Prepare high-impact journal articles and present at international conferences.
- Contribute to workshops and stakeholder briefings on sustainable mobility in mining.
Candidate Profile
- PhD (complete or imminent) in Renewable Energy, Electrical Engineering, E-Mobility, Mining Engineering, or related field.
- Proven publication record in sustainability, energy systems, simulation, and/or transportation research.
- Technical skills: Python programming; simulation.
- Domain knowledge: Decarbonization modeling, life-cycle assessment, battery-electric vehicle technologies; mining operations experience is a plus.
- Soft skills: Strong analytical mindset, excellent written & oral communication, and ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
How to Apply
Please submit the following (PDF format):
- Cover Letter (1–2 pages) outlining your fit for data-driven decarbonization of mining fleets.
- Curriculum Vitae, with a list of publications.
- References: Names, affiliations, and contact details for three referees.
- Research Statement (max. 2 pages) summarizing past work and proposed research directions in mining decarbonization.
Deadline: Open until filled. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt.
