Position Details (PhD Program)

The Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences doctorate at Politecnico di Torino is representing an effective incubator from which to develop, through an interdisciplinary collaboration at the research and training level, cutting-edge  methodologies and technologies which could provide an answer to most recent problems in biomedical research.

As training objectives, the Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences Course at Politecnico di Torino , continuing the training course conducted in the first five years since its establishment, aims to:

  • offer capable and motivated students an even more qualified training on the topics of current international research in the fields of Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences and in the interdisciplinary areas connected to them;
  • integrate a solid theoretical-conceptual preparation with full mastery of the most up-to-date quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and techniques;
  • combining the specialization of the disciplinary field and the plurality of theoretical and methodological approaches, in order to provide doctoral students with an easily expendable training.

Career opportunities

The Università degli Studi di Torino finances 3 scholarships for each cycle. The Politecnico di Torino financed 14 scholarships on the 36th cycle, 11 on the 35th, 8 on the 34th and 12 on the 33rd For the 35th, 36th and 37th cycles, thanks to the ‘Departments of Excellence’ project of the Department of Surgical Sciences, there are two additional scholarships per cycle.

The medical device market is constantly growing and becoming comparable to the drugs market. In this area, the space for further technological innovations that result from extensive scientific and medical researches is huge, also thanks to the development of new areas of research as described above and inter-disciplinary contexts, such as nanotechnology.

In this context, the companies that produce medical devices, in particular implantable ones, need to find experts that are able to secure sufficient technological innovation, making their products competitive on the market. Similarly, public hospitals and private clinics need qualified personnel capable of interacting with technology providers to ensure increasingly advanced, competitive and high-quality services. The professional environment must also be characterized by a careful and thorough knowledge of the regulatory frameworks for medical devices, which are increasingly stringent and constantly evolving.

The aim of this PhD is to create professionals able to interact with healthcare structures, companies and universities, and to be able to work driven by initiative and entrepreneurship, such as to support the consolidation processes, the evolution and innovation of the local systems of small and medium enterprises in order to strengthen their competitiveness, especially in the field of new technologies applied to medicine and surgery.

Courses included:

  • Additive Manufacturing in Bioengineering and Surgery
  • Advanced Therapies (Nanomedicine, Gene and Cell Therapy) in Surgery
  • Clinical indicators for patient care
  • In-vitro and in-silico techniques for the chemical-mechanical analysis of materials and devices in the medical-dental field
  • Mechanobiology: A new frontier field in biomedical research for advanced clinical strategies
  • Materials and applications of robotics in biomedicine
