DistriNet is a world-leading research group at KU Leuven (http://distrinet.cs.kuleuven.be/). Our research focuses on distributed software systems and secure software engineering, covering topics such as the security of IoT systems, cloud applications, enterprise software, and data systems. DistriNet’s applied research unit at Group-T focuses specifically on:
– Intelligent and distributed e-application security
– Security of IoT and cyber-physical systems

Project

Communication networks are evolving at a breathtaking pace. The standards that will define tomorrow’s networks are already being designed today. Among the most widely used technologies for connecting devices to the Internet are cellular networks — not just for smartphones and personal devices, but increasingly for security-critical systems. Ensuring their resilience is therefore a top priority. The foundations of security for cellular networks lie in both the security standards defined by 3GPP and their real-world implementations in broadband modem ICs. This project focuses on uncovering security vulnerabilities in these implementations using automated over-the-air fuzzing.
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD who shares our passion for high-impact research. As part of our team, you will:
  • Design and develop advanced fuzzing frameworks for over-the-air fuzzing of cellular network implementations. 
  • Explore the role of AI in boosting the efficiency and coverage of automated fuzzing techniques.
  • Analyse security standards for current and next-generation cellular networks.
  • Contribute to high-impact research at the crossroads of network security, software engineering, and future communications technology.

Profile

We are looking for a candidate who shares our passion for high-impact research and innovation in this critical domain. You are an ideal fit if you have:
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering Technology (ICT, cybersecurity, software development, etc.), Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and technical expertise.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
  • A solid foundation in software security and cybersecurity in general.
Additional assets
  • Practical experience in fuzzing or cybersecurity testing.
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts or AI platforms.
  • Curiosity, creativity, and the drive to explore new research ideas.
