Position Details (PhD Program)

Although plenty of cancer research is in the field of cancer cell biology, there is lack of knowledge that can cascade the biological theory to those measurable parameters that can be obtained non-destructive and in real-time at clinical level. The ultimate diagnosis still rely purely on testing of biopsy. Learn more at Cell Mechanics and Tumour Growth from the Loughborough University.

Key facts of the  Cell Mechanics and Tumour Growth Cell Mechanics and Tumour Growth programme offered by  Loughborough University Loughborough University

Mechanical properties of tumour tissue can be used as indicators to predict the type cancer and their grade. The growth of tumour and its severity are determined by the capability of cells to multiply and migrate to the adjacent tissue.

Cell mechanics and their interaction with the local tissue structure play an important role in tumour growth and cancer cell invasion. In order to understand why different type of cancer cells respond differently to various chemical and physical treatments, it is critical to gain insight on the biophysical interactions between the invading cells and the local tissue structures.

Within this project we will focus on different type of breast cancers to investigate the interaction of tissue stiffness and cell mechanics at both tissue, cell and sub-celluar levels.

In vitro 2D and 3D models will be established to replicate the tumour microenvironment and data derived from experimental work will further feed into modellings that can simulate the collective behaviours of cells in terms of tumour growth. The ultimate aim is to develop supplementary criteria based on the understanding of biophysical mechanisms in tumour growth and inform clinical decision.
