EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Embedded Intelligence
Position Details (PhD Program)
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Embedded Intelligence from Loughborough University is multidisciplinary by nature and underpinned by diverse areas of expertise (electrical, electronic, mechanical and systems engineering, materials, design, information management and computer science).
Embedded Intelligence requires the use of sensors, communications and processing that are embedded into the product, process or service in order to meet specific objectives. As such, the embodiment of EI depends on a multidisciplinary approach for successful implementation.
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Embedded Intelligence EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Embedded Intelligence programme at Loughborough University Loughborough University is a unique 4-year journey.
Loughborough University’s researchers follow a bespoke, student-centric industry-informed programme of training:
- A focused, deep technical training and experience in an embedded intelligence thematic area central to their doctoral studies, coupled with group and individual industry-led projects from the first month of studies;
- Translational training in essential underpinning knowledge for embedded systems and technology;
- Transferable skills to fulfil the expectations for future leadership roles in industry, in society and as entrepreneurs.
PhD Research Undertaking industry-relevant PhD research is the primary focus for our researchers.
The researchers are working across high priority areas such as autonomous complex manufactured products and systems, functional materials with high performance systems, data-to-knowledge solutions (e.g. digital healthcare and digitally connected citizens), and engineering for industry, life and health.
Taught Component
All the researchers have at least one industrial beneficiary for their PhD research.
The researchers select taught training based on their background and the skills and expertise required for their PhD research.
The University takes a student-centred approach to training, which ensures the researchers access the very best training to meet their requirements. In consultation with their supervisory team the researchers choose taught modules provided by either Loughbrough University, Heriot-Watt University or from external providers.
Embedded Intelligence requires the use of sensors, communications and processing that are embedded into the product, process or service in order to meet specific objectives. As such, the embodiment of EI depends on a multidisciplinary approach for successful implementation.
We see Embedded Intelligence (EI) as the integration of intelligence into products, processes and services so they work better and can increase productivity, efficiency and connectivity.
We offer fully funded studentships to eligible candidates in the areas of autonomous products, functional materials, high performance connected systems, data-to-knowledge solutions, and engineering for industry, life and health
