Position Details (PhD Research Project)

The Life Sciences & Society Lab is a dynamic interdisciplinary group within the Faculty of Social Sciences that studies the ethical and social dimensions of biomedical innovations. Members of the Lab publish their work in international peer reviewed journals, participate in national and international research projects, and provide societal and policy-relevant impact.

Project

Your PhD research will be situated within the broad thematic domains of the Lab, such as:
  • The ethical and social aspects of personalized, data-driven medicine;
  • The social mobilization of patient groups in biomedical innovations;

You will have the opportunity  – together with your supervisor(s) – to develop your own research project, provided it aligns with the thematic priorities of the Life Sciences & Society Lab. Active cooperation in international and interdisciplinary EU funded projects (on personalized, data-driven cancer care) will form the foundation of the project. You are not only interested in academic inquiry but also eager to translate research results into actionable insights and policy recommendations.

Profile

The ideal PhD candidate:
  • Holds a Master’s degree in sociology, science and technology studies, bioethics, philosophy, or a relevant other discipline;
  • Has an outstanding record of undergraduate and master’s degree work;
  • Is a highly motivated candidate with strong interest in the ethical and social aspects of biomedical innovations;
  • Has experience with empirical qualitative methods in the social and health sciences (e.g., document analysis, interviews, ethnography);
  • Can combine academic writing with the ability to formulate policy-relevant insights;
  • Is open to supporting teaching activities and coaching bachelor and master students carrying out their thesis;
  • Works independently, while also being a team player in an interdisciplinary and international research environment;
  • Has good communication and organization skills;
  • Has the ability to meet deadlines and complete a PhD thesis within four years;
  • Has excellent command of academic English, both written and orally, with excellent Dutch language skills.

Offer

  • We are offering a full time appointment (100%) within a highly motivated research group with relevant experience and expertise. For this job, a one-year contract is offered that, after a positive evaluation, can be extended. The starting date can be negotiated.

  • Funding for conference attendance, methodological training, and knowledge valorisation initiatives is provided.
