Your Responsibilities

  • Writing a dissertation at the University of Graz with a clear reference to the topic of multilingual communication and translation in crisis and disaster settings
  • Participation in the research area  “Translation, Migration and Minorities” and in particular in research projects on multilingual communication and translation in spaces of crisis and disaster
  • Publications in scientific journals and/or in another form of knowledge dissemination (knowledge transfer, e.g. also in socially relevant activities)
  • Participation in and co-organisation of workshops, symposia and conferences
  • Independent teaching of courses and participation in teaching and examination tasks of the department
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in organizational and administrative tasks as well as in evaluation measures

Your Profile

  • Completed diploma or master’s degree in the field of translation studies and/or social sciences
  • Familiarity with translation studies and/or social science theories and research methods
  • Research interest in human agents, practices, technologies, artefacts, spaces and settings of multilingual communication and translation in migration, crisis and disaster contexts
  • Openness to exploring new approaches in researching the interrelations between migration, minorities, crises and translation
  • Solid knowledge of German and English as well as knowledge of another language, preferably from outside Europe
  • Academic curiosity
  • Creative and critical thinking
  • Intercultural competence
  • Communication skills, organisational skills, and especially teamwork abilities
  • Independent working style, self-initiative and proactive
  • Reliability, resilience and flexibility

  • Letter of motivation and academic CV
  • Complete proof of completion of the degree program required in the call for applications
  • Proof of the language skills, required in the curriculum, if the doctoral programme is not completed in the first language (please note that an admission is required). For a doctorate in Translation Studies (within the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Humanities) a language certificate in German or English on a C1 Level (CEFR C1) is required.
  • Proposal of 2-3 pages for a PhD project (including short bibliography) within the topic area multilingual communication and translation in spaces of crisis and disaster

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 52.007,20 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.
