Software Developer (React, Node.js, PostgreSQL) transitioning into Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking

I am a software developer from Malawi with hands-on experience across the full stack — React, React Native, Vue 3 with TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. I have built and deployed production systems independently, including an offline-first health information platform for community health workers in Malawi’s district health system, handling features like data synchronization, secure authentication, and reporting.

Alongside my development work, I have a strong and growing interest in cybersecurity and ethical hacking. I practice penetration testing techniques using Kali Linux and am committed to building deep, practical expertise in network security and vulnerability assessment. I am pursuing this program to formalize that knowledge, learn from experienced practitioners, and contribute to strengthening cybersecurity capacity in Malawi and across the region.

I bring a builder’s mindset to this field: I don’t just want to understand how systems are attacked, I want to know how to design and defend systems that matter to real communities.

As a Frontend Developer at Intelligent Monitoring Systems (IMOSYS), I develop and maintain enterprise business applications and integrated systems that support organisational operations and service delivery. My responsibilities include collaborating with internal teams to design and support system integrations and data exchange workflows between business applications and external services, improving system performance and maintainability through modular solutions, and resolving deployment-related issues.
I also investigate, analyse, and resolve system and integration faults to support continuous system improvement, and provide ongoing system support, troubleshooting, and guidance to users to ensure smooth operation of business applications.
This experience is directly relevant to my field of study, as it has given me practical exposure to system security considerations, API integration risks, authentication and access control (OAuth2, JWT, API keys), and the kind of system-level troubleshooting that connects directly to cybersecurity and ethical hacking — understanding how systems are built and integrated is foundational to understanding how they can be secured or exploited.
