Postdoctoral research position in mathematical statistics
Position Details (Postdoc)
Within the framework of research projects on Statistical Inference for Contemporary data structures (including directional data), we have a vacancy for a one-year postdoctoral position in Statistics.
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a very active research group in mathematical statistics, consisting of members of the research group ORSTAT at the Faculty of Economics and Business, and members of the section Statistics and Risk, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.
Responsibilities
The candidate will take part in a research project contributing in developing new statistical methodologies for contemporary data structures to tackle challenging research questions. The considered data structures include in particular data belonging to non-Euclidean spaces (data on a simplex, data on a circle, a hypersphere, a torus, ...). Flexible modelling and inference methods focus on avoiding making (too) restrictive assumptions. This often requires semiparametric or nonparametric inference techniques.
Profile
- Candidates should have a doctoral degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Business Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Computer Science, and experience with nonparametric and/or semiparametric statistical techniques.
- Students that are in the last stage towards obtaining a PhD degree can apply.
- Candidates should have a clear interest in mathematical foundations in statistics, and in providing methodology with the necessary theoretical support. The practical implementation of the developed methods is part of the project, and hence skills in computations and implementation (via codes written in open source software, such as R, Python, ...) are a plus.
- An appropriate knowledge of written and spoken English is required.
Offer
- We offer a high-level and exciting international research environment, offering you the opportunity to build up research and innovation skills for a future career.
- The research team is headed by Professors Claeskens and Gijbels, both with a recognized international reputation, and a large international research network.
- A contract of one year, with opportunities to participate at national and international scientific events (for dissemination of scientific results).
