Job description

We are looking forhighly qualified and motivatedDoctoral Researchersto join the The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) at Tampere University.Our Faculty is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Our existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell and molecular biology, with applications in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, immunology, and ophthalmology.

The position of doctoral researcher offers you the opportunity to concentrate full time on your doctoral studies while receiving high-quality supervision along with the freedom and encouragement to develop your ideas in a supportive, inspirational and multidisciplinary research environment.

Successful candidates pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral program in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. Doctoral researchers are hired on a fixed-term basis. The expected duration of full-time studies is four years and the contract's length depends on how far along in your studies you are as well as your expected graduation date. The employment contracts that can be granted may be up to four years for two applicants, two years for ten applicants, and the remaining positions will be shorter fixed-term contracts.

In addition to the thesis work, you may be expected to teach or do other work connected to your studies at the Faculty. These duties may not exceed 5 % of your overall working hours.

The positions carry a trial period, and the progress of the thesis work is evaluated annually according to the personal study and supervisory plan for doctoral studies.

Requirements

A higher university degree is required for the position of a doctoral researcher. Before the employment begins, the doctoral researcher must have the right to pursue postgraduate studies in the faculty’s doctoral program and an approved study and research plan. Doctoral program students are required to have annual meetings with their follow‑up group and to provide appropriate reporting on them.

If the student is not yet part of the Faculty's doctoral program (Doctoral program in Medicine, Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering) at the time of application, the student must contact the faculty group leader and agree on the supervision and the availability of supervision resources before submitting the application. The Steering Group of the Faculty's Doctoral program proposes doctoral researchers to be selected for the doctoral program, and the Dean of the Faculty decides on the employment.

The positions will be full-time and they will be filled for a fixed-term period starting in the beginning of May 2026, at the earliest, or as mutually agreed. A trial period applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale based on the successful candidate’s progress of his or her doctoral studies. In addition, employees will receive a performance-based salary.
