Position Details (PhD Research Project)

Faculty of Information Technology is seeking to recruit a Doctoral Researcher in Quantum Programming and Algorithms starting February1, 2026, or as soon as possible for 4 years. The fixed-term position is for completing doctoral studies.

This Ph.D. project aims to explore methods to develop in order to support distributed quantum computing. This will include, but is not limited to, the design of distributed quantum algorithms, circuits, and error correction, as well as the interplay between circuit optimization and circuit distribution (partitioning) to achieve the highest efficiency while considering the merits and constraints. The successful candidate will develop software tools for distributed quantum algorithms, circuits, and error correction.


Who we are looking for

  • Excellent M.Sc. degree in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Quantum Technology, or related field
  • Strong Python programming skills (required)
  • Knowledge of quantum computing principles (required)
  • Knowledge of conventional communication networks and/or distributed computing (advantage)
  • Experience with Qiskit, QuTiP, pytket, circuit optimization, or quantum error correction (advantage)
  • Background in software development (advantage)
  • Optimization techniques and machine learning (advantage)
  • Ability to conduct independent research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Collaborative, proactive, and result-oriented working style
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Strong interest in the research project you are applying to.

We are seeking highly motivated, innovative, productive person, who will contribute intellectually to project development.

The tasks of a Doctoral Researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these.Selected Doctoral Researcher is expected to complete their doctoral dissertation and obtain their doctoral degree within a maximum of four years. The duties, qualification requirements, and the language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated bythe University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines(Doctoral Students). A good command of English is required. A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of the employment.

The eligible candidate has a suitable master’s degree. In addition, the Doctoral Researcher must havea permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must beapplied witha separate applicationprocedurefrom the Faculty of Information Technologyafter selection for the position.

The salary for a Doctoral Researcher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 2–4 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The starting salary will be approximately 2500 €/month(gross income).With progress of thesis work, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Education Employers.
