Position Details (PhD Research Project)

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

ID20 is dedicated to the study of electronic and magnetic excitations in matter using resonant and non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering as well as emission spectroscopy. The main scientific activities comprise the investigation of strongly correlated electron systems, functional materials, and the study of matter at extreme conditions.

You will join a collaboration between the ESRF, the University of Cologne, and Politecnico Milano to develop and use RIXS interferometry at ligand K-edges, e.g. the p-block elements As, Se, and Br, in order to investigate new 3d- and 4d Mott and Cluster Mott insulators. The project will represent a significant step towards the use of RIXS interferometry for the study of correlated many-body systems.
