PhD for Atmospheric Sciences- Environmental
Position Details (PhD Program)
About our Campus:The position will be based at the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment on the Hebrew University’s beautiful Rehovot Campus. Rehovot is centrally located, only a 30 minutes’ drive from Tel Aviv and one hour away from Jerusalem with public transportation.
About Our Department:
The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES)established in October 2020, serves as a pivotal entity within the University’s Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment. It integrates over 40 research laboratories from four departments. The Institute's research endeavours aim to develop management tools and technologies with global applicability contributing to environmental preservation andsustainableagriculture.
About Our Research: This PhD position is part of a research project funded by the Israel Science Foundation. The goal is to develop an improved parameterization for ozone dry deposition in air quality and climate models. Tropospheric ozone is a key air pollutant that impacts health, agriculture, and climate. Around 20–25% of tropospheric ozone is removed by dry deposition, particularly to vegetation. However, this process is not well understood, which limits the accuracy of current models. The project will use a comprehensive dataset of micrometeorological measurements, custom-developed software tools, and atmospheric models to address this gap.
Job Description: We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to conduct research at the intersection of atmospheric science, environmental modeling, and micrometeorological measurements, such as the eddy covariance. The candidate will work with field data, develop computational tools, and contribute to the improvement of ozone dry deposition representations in models. This role includes data analysis, programming, conducting field measurements and collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team.
About Your Supervisor: Dr. Eran Tas is an assistant Professor at the Institute of environmental sciences at the Hebrew University, whose expertise is in atmospheric chemistry and air pollution, with a particular focus on biosphere-atmosphere gas exchange. He completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry (1994-1997) and M.Sc. in Air-Pollution and Trans-Boundary Transport (1998-2000) at the Hebrew University. Dr. Tas earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Chemistry (2001-2007), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (2007-2009) and the Weizmann Institute of Science (2010-2012). His research interests encompass canopy-atmosphere gas exchange, atmospheric chemistry and air pollution. Dr. Tas has contributed significantly to understanding the implications of vegetation-atmosphere gas exchange on atmospheric composition, air pollution and climate change.
Funding:
An annual stipend ranging from 72,000 to 84,000 NIS (approximately 22,064 to 26,000 USD) covered by the Israel Science Foundation.
Your Profile (To excel in this role, we require candidates with):
