Position Details (Postdoc)
A postdoctoral position is available for highly motivated candidates with a background in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent.
The Department of Materials and Manufacturing is a vibrant multidisciplinary research and education environment that advances the state-of-the-art knowledge and fosters the development of highly skilled researchers and professionals. Our research focuses on material properties and manufacturing processes for mainly metallic components, specifically cast components. The department collaborates with national and international research institutes and industrial partners,and is engaged in basic and applied research projects. Coproduction with industrial partners is a strong characteristic of our project portfolio, both with large companies and SMEs.
The main research focus is on developing high-performance metallic materials that are resistant to burning or combustion in high-pressure, high-purity Oxygen environments. The target products include components for space travel combustion engines. The research involves computational thermodynamics (CALPHAD), high-throughput computational screening methods for alloy design, experimental alloy production (casting and/or AM), testing and characterisation of the thermo-physical and mechanical properties of the designed materials, and benchmarking against existing solutions.
The project is conducted in close collaboration with the Swedish aerospace industry. The position is funded by the IRON-X project (Swedish National Space Agency).
Job description
The tasks primarily involve research (minimum 80%) and may also include some educational activities (maximum 20%). You will need to cooperate closely not only with department personnel but also with industrial partners in the project.
You might also co-supervise postgraduate students within the topic.
To ensure industrial relevance, it is essential to maintain a broad perspective on the research, encompassing environmental, economic, and societal impacts.
Qualifications
You need to:
- have been awarded a Doctorate degree
- have a background in physical mechanical metallurgy or relevant topics
- be result-oriented and have high level of motivation and will to face challenges and conduct systematic research to solve them, if necessary, by learning/adopting new techniques/theories
- thoroughly understand and conduct good research practices according to the desired time table.
- be creative and eager to share knowledge via publication in reputed journals/conferences.
- be able to efficiently supervise under- and/or post-graduate students.
It is meritorious if you have:
- a PhD degree that has been obtained no more than 2 years before the deadline for application.
- hands-on experience in combustion or burn-resistant testing
- demonstrated experience with conducting microstructural characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS, EBSD, FIB/SEM etc., as well as physico-mechanical characterization techniques such as tensile, compression, DSC/TGA, etc. as well as analysis of the data with good knowledge of possible errors.
- hands-on experience with alloy design strategies, including high-throughput screening algorithms, is meritorious
