Yousif (Adil) Shamoo is a Professor at Rice University and Principal Investigator of the Shamoo Lab. His research integrates biophysics, molecular evolution, and microbiology to understand how proteins evolve and how pathogens adapt to antibiotics and host environments. The lab develops experimental evolution and structural approaches to map fitness landscapes, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and virulence determinants in bacterial pathogens. Shamoo’s work bridges quantitative biophysical measurements with evolutionary dynamics to inform strategies for combating drug resistance. At Rice, he leads interdisciplinary collaborations and trains students and postdocs in rigorous, mechanism-driven research on microbial evolution and disease.
