Herb Schroeder

Herb “Herbie” Schroeder is the founder and executive director of the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) at the University of Alaska Anchorage. A professor of engineering, he built ANSEP into a statewide, longitudinal model that supports Indigenous and rural students from middle school through graduate studies and into careers. His work emphasizes culturally relevant STEM education, community partnerships, and systemic change to improve student outcomes. Schroeder has received national recognition for expanding access to engineering and science fields across Alaska, leading initiatives that grow local talent, strengthen STEM readiness, and create sustainable educational pathways.
