Guy Bertrand is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California San Diego and Director of the UCSD–CNRS Joint Research Chemistry Laboratory. He is internationally recognized for pioneering work on stable carbenes and electron-rich main-group species, redefining reactivity traditionally reserved for transition metals. His group designs, synthesizes, and applies novel ligands and main-group compounds to enable sustainable catalysis and new bond-forming strategies. Bertrand has authored numerous publications and patents, and his discoveries have impacted organocatalysis, materials, and small-molecule activation. He leads a diverse, collaborative team advancing fundamental inorganic and organic chemistry with broad practical applications.
